What is an early pregnancy scan?
You can have an early pregnancy scan if you are between 6 and 11 weeks pregnant. The scan is usually performed transabdominally (over the tummy) but sometimes a transvaginal ultrasound scan needs to be performed if the scan over the tummy is unclear. This will be discussed with you if needed.
At the scan we can confirm the presence of your baby’s heartbeat and confirm how many weeks you are pregnant.
This scan will give you reassurance that your baby is located safely in your womb and is doing well.
Why have an early pregnancy scan?
If you have had previous miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies, an early pregnancy scan can help reassure you that all is well with your current pregnancy. If you are having symptoms such as bleeding or pain during early pregnancy, a scan may identify what the issues are. In the case of these symptoms do speak to a health care professional urgently.
If your pregnancy has been assisted, e.g. through IVF, you can be reassured that all has gone well and the pregnancy is progressing.
How should I prepare for my early pregnancy scan?
You should make your appointment no earlier than two weeks after your positive pregnancy test and no earlier than six weeks after the first day of your last period. This is your ‘last menstrual period date’ or LMP.
Please arrive with a full bladder. This will help the sonographer be able to get a clear picture of your baby by transabdominal scan.
If a transabdominal scan isn’t possible, a transvaginal scan may be required to view your baby.
About the early pregnancy scan
At this stage, we confirm the presence of your baby’s heartbeat, ensure the pregnancy is developing in the correct location, and provide an estimated gestational age.
